How to report an error
Email [email protected] with the page address, what is wrong and, if you have it, the official source that shows the correct information. Photo authors can ask for a credit to be fixed or a photo removed.
What is checked before publication
- Every state guide and species guide passes an independent second check against its official sources before it is published. Records that have not passed it are not shown.
- Quoted passages are compared with our archived copy of the source they are attributed to. A sentence from another source, or our own explanation, is never shown inside quotation marks.
- A "venomous" or "non-venomous" label appears only where an official source says so for that species, and links to that source.
- Photos of snakes, lizards, spiders, scorpions and other dangerous animals are checked by eye to be the exact species before they are used.
- Observation maps and month bars come from open-licence GBIF records. They show where and when people recorded an animal, and are never used to say whether it is dangerous.
Errors can still slip through, which is why reports matter. The most useful report names the page, the sentence and an official source.
How we handle corrections
- We check the report against the official source the page cites, and against any newer official source you point us to.
- Safety-related errors, such as a wrong venomous label or a missing venomous species, are fixed first.
- When a fact changes, the page's "Last checked" date changes with it, and the sources list shows the source and its date.
- We do not change a fact on the strength of unofficial sources alone; if official sources disagree, the page says whose wording it uses.
